Second Life® Bloggers :: Blogging the metaverse one post at a time....

I blog about everything including Second Life, groups, art, music, fashion and lifestyles of the avatars themselves. Yesterday, I opened two of my sims to the general public for a birthday party for my partner. We had a blast with a bunch of dj's and club owners. The problem I had though was with an avie that refused to leave at the end of the party. (Kinda like the guy who passes out on the couch at the office party... and you can't budge them)

I tried to talk to him and explain that I was closing the sim. No response. So, I had to pull a Mysti on him. Boing to the edges of the sim... and I watched as the poor avie went up and down which seemed like an eternity. Back to the Mysti... this time I sent him home. This time he did not return. Opening sims to the public is a risk without proper security tools. Any suggestions out there besides the ol' Mysti? And, how do you handle auto returns?

If someone seems AFK on your land, you can always right-click on them and do Eject or Teleport Home from the pie menus (which is really exactly the same thing that Mystitool does). Seems perfectly proper if you've made an honest attempt to talk to them and they're unresponsive.

On most of my land I have object autoreturn set to three hours; long enough for someone to play around, short enough that litter doesn't become a problem. On one parcel I have somethings that a friend set up for me; rather than bothering with group stuff I just leave autoreturn off on that parcel and remember to clean it up by hand every few days, or when I notice litter. Seems to work. On the other hand I don't have many huge parties. :)

hey Dale! how are ya? it was my FIRST party ever on my lands. gawd, what a lot of work! (not huge, just about 20 peeps; huge is 70+ like dance island!)

the prob was the avie. i know him. so it was an uncomfortable situation... and i hope he's not mad at me for the boot. (rudy... are ya hearin' me m8?)

the prob i have is griefing. seems a lot of avies feel like you about corp avies... and we become fair game to harass. it is unbelievable what i've gone through these past two years. on the regions, it's an easy solution to set autoreturn to zero or to a low number and set objects/scripts off, but on mainland??? i can't be everywhere at once. (i do have security orbs... seems hackers can circumvent that one due to the lag) i have had neighbors IM me to let me know a griefing is happening...

one night, i had spent 4 hrs working on a waterfall; hand built, no mega prims. i left the mainland that evening only to return the next morning to see the entire structure exploded into smithereens. at first i started crying. then i started laughing. then i saw it as a game to just annoy me. luckily, i had saved the 2 sections in my inventory. rezzed it back and kept going. stuff like that is definitely, just plain mean.

am wondering though... how to autoreturn a dead avie (bot) ... i tried the mysti tool and the right-click... whoa... it didnt budge the dead bot at all... very creeeeeepy. i ended up pushing the bot to the edge of the border... now that was an interesting solution, and i wished i had filmed it, 'cause i looked pretty silly doing it!

Hey, I don't hate corporate entities, I just feel weird being friends with them sight unseen! :)

Yeah, griefing and litter are both a pain. You can set autoreturn and banlists and other parcel settings on the mainland just fine, as long as you're the parcel owner. If you need a device to let group members or other authorized people eject/ban griefers in your absence, see SLex, or drop me a line. :)

I'm surprised someone was able to destroy an object that you owned; that shouldn't be possible, short of a serious bug in the server-side code. On the other hand, we know bugs exist. :) One statue in my park, of great sentimental value, seems to move around all by itself, and is entirely missing at the moment. I'll have to IM the artist and ask for a replacement soon if it doesn't return. Very weird...

Surprised also that right-clicking didn't get rid of the bot! Possibly it was a ghost (i.e. some part of the server thought it was there, so you could move it around, but other parts didn't, so you couldn't send it home). The difference between how the world's supposed to work and how it actually works never ceases to surprise me. :)

not meaning you dale... talking about others... that feel that way... besides; aren't most of us unseen? LOL! i have never met my partner in rl... or any of the friends on my friend's list... and they are not corp avies.

yeah... the exploded waterfall... that really happened and i have old pictures of it. this started happening on a regular basis... exploded builds. not sure how they did it. i own the land, i own the build... but it did. it got to the point that i felt like maybe someone just didn't like how it looked LOL! art critics, i suppose... maybe they thought it was an eyesore...

another "cute" thing they did was raise the entire build... that was clever. the entire waterfall and river would be above the land... lol! that was an easy fix, but quite annoying... on the regions, one day the entire land mass had been risen over 15 meters "drowning" everthing in its place. that pissed me off.

ahhhh... that makes sense about the ghost... how many times have we seen a friend crash and still see them online... dats weird! yes, the bugs make life interesting on the grid...

one thing i dont do anymore is mega prims... especially on the mainland. i do have a few on the regions... but even then i try not to use them. something that is not supported by LL is something i don't want to support either. so i sacrifice a few prims...
